The Last Coat of Finish?

First thing this evening I spent considerable time wiping down my “finishing booth” hoping to remove as much dust as possible. What I know about getting a good smooth finish with polyurethane is avoiding ‘stuff’ falling on the surface until it has time to smooth out, the bubbles to pop, and a smooth skin to form.

It took longer than expected to sand the slab tonight. There were some drips along the front edge I had not noticed, and I had to spend a considerable amount of time sanding, scraping (with a fingernail) and feathering things down. After that it was a careful wipe down with wet paper towels and some time to dry.

If I’m lucky tonight will be my last coat of finish on the slab. Of course, with the way woodworking goes, especially in a small shop without a dedicated finishing space, it’s more likely I’ll be that close but still need another sanding and another thin coat.
